Merthyr Tydfil can be referred to as a town as well as county borough located in Wales, UK. Previously, it was situated in Glamorgan county. This place is commonly known as ‘Merthyr’.
Industrial revolution of the 18th century led iron industry to grow by leaps and bounds; thanks to location of Merthyr in the vicinity of limestone, coal, water, and iron ore reserves. This made it the perfect site with regards to ironworks.
Borough boundaries which are seen at present can be traced back to the year 1974. It was the period when previous Merthyr Tydfil borough went on to expand a bit; thereby covering Glamorgan’s Bedlinog and Breconshire’s Vaynor.
This led to the formation of local government district on the part of Merthyr within Mid Glamorgan’s administrative county. It, however, went on to revert to a ‘county borough’ on 1st of April, 1996.
Merthyr Tydfil Borough Council comprises of 11 wards which are represented by 33 councillors.
