Saint Sophia Cathedral in Kiev

One of the most renowned pieces of architecture in the Ukraine is how Saint Sophia Cathedral is considered.

This is the first piece of architecture in the Ukraine which is listed in the World Heritage sites. The construction of this magnificent monument started in 1037. However, the construction took almost two decades to finish. This mesmerizing place is an architectural wonder.

It has five apses and five naves. This monument is the architectural blend of a Ukrainian and Byzantine style. It is rare to see Byzantine architecture with cupolas and this has 13 cupolas. The complete monument is surrounded by galleries on two levels.

Besides the magnificent exterior, the monument features an enchanting interior. The interior is dotted with frescos and mosaics dating back to the 11th century. One can even see the illustration of the family of Yaroslav. The place witnessed evangelism after the arrival of St. Vladimir in the year 988. The spirituality can be still felt in this monument.
