Amesbury is exclusively famous for the ancient monuments of Stonehenge. It is an unsolved mystery which is why the great circle of huge stones was made over here. The stones don’t belong to the same period.
Their origin ranges from 3000 BC to 1600 BC. The famous World Heritage Site is a powerful witness of the great and mysterious civilization of Bronze and Stone ages.
The burial place of Amesbury Archer, from whom the town got its name was discovered in mid- 2002. He was a man from the Bronze Age, dating back to 2300 BC. Archer is his nickname, as enormous numbers of arrowheads were found buried in his grave. Apart from the arrowheads, many other artefacts were recovered.
Woodhenge is yet another ancient monument found near Amesbury in Salisbury. The monument is located between Amesbury and Larkhil. The ceremonial monument of Neolithic era dates back from the 2300 BC. It is believed that there must have been more than 40 similar monuments present in that area.
