The pop singer Robert Palmer was born in this city, professional snooker player Paul Hunter also lived in Batley before his death, also the author of the Asian liverbird book – Mohammad Bhana has lived his entire life here.
During late 19th century the town was a trade center for shoddy trade, which produced blankets, carpets, uniforms. This is when the city had a major growth in its history. The city has started declining in the recent times.
The city is well known for the sport – rugby and it has a professional Rugby League Club named Batley Bulldogs. The city is also a part of the European Union Transformation Zone.
