Belsay: Attractions and more...

Belsay Hall is a 19th century country mansion and a grade I listed building. The house was built between 1810 and 1817 for Sir Charles Monck and designed by architect John Dobson in the Greek Doric style. The house measures 100 feet sq with a lower kitchen wing attached to the north side. The hall was the residence of the Middleton family until 1962. The village has a thriving first school, post office and shop and garage. There is a daily bus service to Ponteland and Newcastle and a weekly service to Morpeth.

Near to Belsay is the Boalm Lake where there is a country park surrounding the lake, which is an artificial stretch of water created in 1818 by Mr. John Dobson. One can still see red squirrels in the woods and enjoy fishing, paddling and boating in the lake. Belsay Hall with its vast, magnificent 30 acres of gardens are deservedly listed as Grade I in the Register of Gardens and largely unaltered for over 200 years. The famous unique Quarry Garden, a micro-climate of ravines, corridors and pinnacles is decorated by vines and ferns with rhododendrons that flower for most of the year. Belsay includes informal gardens like famous quarry gardens with their distinct micro-climate.
