This was the 1st civic theatre which was built after the war in 1958. It has a seating capacity of 866 people in its 2 tier auditorium and is one of the largest regional producing theatres in England. The theatre has been refurbished and has included improved facilities as well as an additional seating capacity of 250-300 people. It is now an English Heritage grade II listed building.
