Tourist Guide Eccles


Eccles is a town which is situated within the metropolitan borough of the City of Salford in England. It is approximately 4 miles to the west of Manchester city centre.  Historically, Eccles was a part of Lancashire and was formerly an important industrial centre situated on the Manchester Ship Canal.  Hence, Eccles is better known as the “birthplace” of the Eccles Cake.

As per the Office for National Statistics, during the UK Census 2001, Eccles had a population of around 11,413, of which males were almost 5,546 and female population was 5,867.

Until 1877, there was a local annual celebration which was known as the Eccles Wakes. This celebration was abolished by the Home Secretary.
