Gateshead: Attractions and more...

The town of Gateshead has several tourist attractions with the Angel of the North being the most famous. This is known as a modern architectural wonder of the world.

The 200 ton metal structure is a human figure with outstretched wings. The total height of this giant angel is around 20 meters, which is taller than a 50 storey building.

The width of the wings is 54 meters, nearly the span of a jumbo jet. This metal wonder took more than six months to finish. In order to stabilize the figure, a base of almost 22 meters deep was dug.

Gateshead has several other attractions. The Gateshead Millennium Bridge crosses the River Tyne. Art lovers can visit the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art. It is located on the southern side of the River.

It is an international centre where lots of contemporary arts exhibitions are held. Hundreds of tourists and local residents visit these events.
