Helmsley: Attractions and more...

Helmsley Castle is an attractive medieval castle which lies behind the market town of Helmsley.

The castle was built in 1120 by Walter l’Espec who had no heirs, so, it passed through the hands of many people who made a number of renovations. The castle is still owned by Lord Feversham and is now under the care of the English Heritage.

Duncombe Park, overlooking the castle, is a historic mansion with a huge parkland, spectacular gardens and tearooms and gift shops.

It was the residence of the Duncombe family for nearly 3 centuries till it was bought by Lord Feversham who renovated the house to its former glory with its opulent drawing room, forty feet high hallway, beautiful temples and fascinating grounds.

The Cleveland Way is a long horseshoe shaped path around the National Park of the North York Moors.

The market square in Helmsley is a lively place with a stone cross and gothic monuments, cafes, pubs, tearooms and other places of interest.
