Ilkeston also known as Ilson is a town within the Borough of Erewash, in Derbyshire, England, and lies on the River Erewash. It is considered by the Office of National Statistics to be a part of Nottingham’s metropolitan area. The city was probably founded in the 6th century AD. The city’s major industries were traditionally coal mining, iron working and lace making textiles which have declined in importance in the last few decades.

Ilkeston Market Place is the site of Ilkeston Charter Fair which is older than Nottingham’s famous Goose Fair, and one of the largest street fairs in the country, celebrated its 750th anniversary in 2002. The notable residents of Ilkeston were Robert Lindsay, William Roache and Samuel Taylor. As per the census of 2001 the population was 37,550 people.
