Carisbrooke Castle is a historic site situated in Carisbrooke village near Newport in the Isle of Wight. This is a fine example of a Norman Castle and is built on the site of the earlier Saxon and Roman defences. In 1377 the castle was captured by the French who landed on the northern shores, however the French Commander was killed and his troops had to pay a large amount of money for their safety. Charles I was imprisoned in this castle before his trial.
