The Tube is the underground metro system in London. It covers a huge part of Greater London.
It also connects the neighboring areas like Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex. The system started in January 1863.
The metro railway lines are called the "Tube" due to the shape of the tunnels which resemble tubes. Previously, majority of the metro service was set above the ground. However, the opening of the first tube line made this service truly underground.
Tubes are considered as the most convenient and fastest mode of transport. A large number of people use this transport since it is cheaper than other modes.
Tourists can buy Tube maps to learn about the routes and stations of the Tube metro. The Tube runs through 11 major lines in London.
These lines pass over 268 stations in different parts of the city.
