Etruria Industrial Museum
About 2 miles away from Newcastle under Lyme is situated the Etruria Industrial Museum. It lies at the meeting point of the Caldon and Trent & Mersey canals. The highlight of this museum is the Jesse Shirley’s Bone & Flint Mill which was constructed in 1857 with an objective of grinding materials for the agricultural and pottery industries. In 1972, production was stopped in this mill. However, at present the historic machinery is still in working state and the steam engine can be viewed in working condition on selected weekends.
Ford Green Hall
The Ford Green Hall is about 4 miles from Newcastle under Lyme. This is a 17th century house that has a period garden and was used for about 2 centuries as a residence by the Ford family. This Hall has been declared to be a museum. The rooms have a collection of furniture, ceramics and reproduction textiles. Children are permitted to use the costumes here and they can attempt the use of a drop spindle. In 1996, a garden was planted as per the 17th century mode of gardening. The herb beds depict how plants were used in the 1600s for textile, cosmetic, culinary, domestic, medicinal and magical reasons.
