Tourist Guide Nuneaton
Located in West Midlands, Nuneaton is the biggest town in the Warwickshire and the Borough of Nuneaton and Bedworth. The town is famous as George Eliot the famous 19th century author was born on the Arbury Estate farm which was located outside this town. The lady spent much of her time in this town. In Scenes of Clerical Life by George Eliot the town has been referred as “Milby”.
The Anker River passes through the town. Towards south of the town at a distance of 14.5 miles is Coventry. At a distance of 32 in the east is Birmingham. Atherstone, Bedworth, Hinckley, Coventry, Tamworth, Lutterworth and Leicester are some of the towns located near Nuneaton. The total population of the town as per 2008 is 73,000.
Before 12th century the community was called “Etone” which literally meant “Water Town”. The name Nuneaton is derived from 12th century Benedictine nunnery. The main economic activities of the town were coal mining, textile industry, brick and tile making and brewing.
