The Sheldonian Theater was built in 1668 by the architect Christopher Wren. The building is dedicated to the chancellor of the university who gave financial backing for the project. The theater is used for lectures, university ceremonies, conferences and musical concerts but not for drama. The theater has a seating capacity of 800 to 1000 people and is open to visitors.
