Portsmouth city is situated in the ceremonial county of Hampshire on the south side of England. This city is the only island city of United Kingdom situated on Portsea Island. Its first settlers were believed to be offshoots of Portchester prior to Roman age. Earlier records show that Portsmouth was founded in 1180 by John of Gisors.

In 1310, the population was 740 and by 1560, it had reached to 1000 inhabitants. In 1901, the population was 188,133 and by 2001, it had reached to 186, 700 people. As per the 2008 census, the estimated population of this city was 200,000 people.

Most parts of the city lies on Portsea Island. The city is spread over an area of 15.5 square miles of land.

The climate of this city is milder than its surrounding areas, with light winter frosts and rare snowfall cases. Further, the temperature rarely drops below freezing point as the city is surrounded by water and is also densely populated.
