St Helens is the biggest settlement within ‘Metropolitan Borough of St Helens’.
If a bit of history is traced, one would get to know that St Helens formed a portion of Lancashire at the time of eighteenth and nineteenth century. It was known as an important center with regards to glassmaking and coal mining. Apart from these two industries, St Helens was also a center of linen and cotton industry; sail making, in particular.
St Helens enjoys the reputation of being the place of the 1st completely man-made canal that had been opened in the year 1757. Furthermore, the 1st competition with respect to steam locomotives, i.e. Rainhills Trials was also held over here.
The population of St Helens was 176843 as per census conducted in the year 2001.
St Helens Borough goes on to cover around 30 sq.Km over a region of soft ‘rolling hills’ which are primarily utilized for farming purposes, arable, in particular.
