Sunderland can be referred to as a city located in Tyne and Wear, England. Previously, it was a ‘county borough’. However, it now forms a portion of ‘City of Sunderland’. It stands on River Wear.
The name ‘Sunderland’ has been derived from Soeder-land; meaning ‘chopped’ in contemporary Danish. It’s assumed to be referred to valley that has been carved by ‘River Wear’ which happens to run through ‘heart of the city’.
The other meaning is that regarding name that refers to ‘land set aside’. It is derived from city’s rich ‘Christian’ heritage. Initially, there were 3 original settlements alongside modern-day Sunderland.
Majority of suburbs of ‘Sunderland’ have been located on the western side of city center. Almost 3/4th of the population stays on the southern side of river. It’s obvious that the rest of the population stays on the northern side.
In the year 2008, it was figured out that Sunderland had maximum number of users of digital television and broadband (across UK).
