Tourist Guide Swinton
Historically, this was a part of Lancashire, and was a small hamlet within the township of Worsley. This hamlet centered on an ancient pig farm or market. Swinton, the name of the town is derived from the Old English name “Swynton” which meant “Swine town”.
During the industrial revolution, Swinton was an industrial area and some of the major industries included the cotton spinning and brick making. The bricks from Swinton were used for some of the ambitious industrial projects.
The first local authority was a local board of health which was established in 1867. The town is located on the gentle sloping grounds above the sea level.
