Roman fort of Segedunum

This fort is located towards Hadrian’s Wall’s eastern outpost. Its origin can be traced back to 122AD. It was the time when Hadrian’s Wall went on to extend from ‘Wallsend’ (in the east) to Bowness-on-Solway (in the west). As such, the basic objective behind its design was to have defended Roman Empire with respect to barbarians on the northern side. The word ‘Segedunum’ means ‘strong fort’. It performed the task of housing around 600 soldiers of Roman Empire for 3 centuries.

The present scenario is such that Segedunum Roman Fort, Museum, and Baths are termed as gateways to such a well-known ‘World Heritage Site’. Today, Segedunum contains fort’s excavated foundations, along with a ‘reconstructed’ Roman bath. Items that were found during excavations are displayed over here. One can see portion of original wall from museum (across street). Thus, it is a place of historic importance.
