Whitby lies at the source of the River Esk. The town is spread across two steep sides of the tapered valley of this river.

According to the census of 2000, the population of the town was 13,740.

The city lies on the north-east side of Yorkshire and the Humber region of England. As a result, this town experiences a continental polar climate.

Due to the continental air mass, the summers may get hot, while the winters are cold.

The polar air masses make the overall climate cool. Hence, winters can be really harsh at times. This combination brings cold and dry air masses.
