York Castle Museum, originated by Dr. John Kirk in 1938, is a history museum that depicts the daily life of the people of London four hundred years ago.

The museum is located on the site of York Castle, built by William the conqueror. Several reconstructed period rooms are housed in the prison building of the museum. One of these is the Victorian Kirkgate, which is named after John Kirk himself where one can see several shops and a police station.

The 2nd is the Half Moon Court which depicts the daily life of the people in York. Here one can visit the prison cells including that of highwayman Dick Turpin who spent his last night in this prison before he was executed.

There is a Jane Austin costume collection, a children’s gallery with huge giant doll’s houses and a number of military exhibits as well.

The museum is situated near the Coppergate shopping centre and Clifford’s Tower.
