Tourist Guide Holywood
The name Holywood has originated from the Latin word Sanctus Boscus meaning “holy wood”. This is a town in down county, Northern Ireland, on the shores of Belfast Lough. In 1900 the population of Holywood was 3,500; but by 2001 it grew to 12,000. Holywood became popular as a resort for sea-bathing in the early 19th century. There was a rapid development after the commencement of the railway line from Belfast to Holywood. Holywood is a popular residential area and is known for fashionable shops, boutiques, arts and crafts.
According to the census of 2001, Holywood had 23%25 people of catholic background and 68%25 were from a protestant background.The old priory ruins lie at the bottom of the high street. The tower dates from 1800, but the oldest date from the early 13th century. The Adjacent Maypole Bar locally known a Ned’s or Carty’s was first licensed in 1857 and it is now run by Ned’s son, Brain Carty.
