Lindisfarne Castle
In the past Lindisfarne Castle was the Tudor Fort. In 1903, the young Edwin Lutyesn transformed it into a private house. It is constructed on a steep and rugged rocky cliff and can be accessed by means of a causeway only during low tide.
In the interior, there are small rooms that have an intimate design and decoration while on the exterior there is a beautiful walled garden which Gertrude Jekyll had planned.
One can reach Holy Island where this castle exists on foot or by vehicle through a causeway that is closed 3 hours after and 2 hours before high tide.
Floors Castle and Gardens
In 1721, the Floors Castle was constructed by William Adam and since then has been the residence of the Duke and Duchess of Roxburghe. The 2nd Duke made roof alterations, the 6th Duke made external remodeling and the 8th Duchess made interior modifications.
In the parkland, one can view some native trees. In the woodlands, there are some majestic sweet chestnut, lime and mature oak trees.
Abbotsford
The Cartley Hall farmhouse existed on the banks of River Tweed. Sir Walter Scott bought it in 1812 and renamed it as Abbotsford. In 1822, the old house was reconstructed.
After Sir Walter Scott’s demise in 1832, further modifications were made to this house. During his lifetime, Sir Scott collected several weapons and armor. There are about 9000 rare volumes in the library.
Visitors are permitted to view the Dining room, the Armory, Entrance Hall, Chinese Drawing Room, Library and Study.
