Captain Scott’s Antarctic exploration RSS Discovery was built right here in Dundee. Today it forms the heart of an impressive maritime exhibition on the Tay. (The link extends even further – whalers sailing out of Dundee rescued the ship).
The ship was one of the very last wooden three-masted ships to be built in
this country, and was the first ship built purely for scientific research.
In keeping with the title ‘City of Discovery’, Dundee is also home
to some of the UK’s most innovative scientists. Professor Sir David Lane
helped to establish Cyclacel, a company which is looking to disrupt the lifecycle
of cancer cells. And Axis-Shield produces innovative medical tests which are
used throughout the world.
With all this science in the city, it’s no surprise that Dundee’s
Science Centre (also known as Sensation) is a little out of the ordinary. Hands-on
and seriously good fun, it’s a perfect antidote to large, sterile museums.
