Tourist Guide Musselburgh
Musselburgh also claims to hold the title of being the oldest place in Scotland.
The name ‘Musselburgh’ has been derived from combination of the words ‘mussel’; referring to ‘shellfish’ in Old English; and ‘burgh’; referring to the word ‘town’ in Old English.
The ‘Battle of Pinkie Cleugh’ had been fought on the southern side of Musselburgh.
The motto of the town has been ‘Honesty’. It can be traced back to the early 13th century; when Randolph, Earl of Moray, Regent of Scotland passed away in this burgh following a prolonged illness. It was the period when he was cared the most by his fellow citizens. Successor of his tried to reward people with regards to their honesty; but they refused; saying that it was their duty. New regent, i.e. Earl of Mar, got extremely impressed and called them ‘Honest’.
Today, Musselburgh is known in the form of a reputable venue pertaining to horse racing.
Population has been estimated to be 22212.
