Edmonton, Alberta’s unique City Hall is one of the city’s most distinguishing features. Considering its two steel and glass pyramids, at first glance you might think you landed in Egypt instead of central Alberta. However, the pyramids are meant to evoke images of the jagged Canadian Rockies, themselves one of the most prominent characteristics of western Canada.
City Hall is the hallmark of Edmonton’s Churchill Square, which is located in the city’s financial district. The one-of-a-kind civic building also sports a 60-metre (200 feet) clock tower and, in front of the entrance, a large fountain that’s used as a skating rink during the cold Canadian winter. A monument to the 1930s Ukrainian Famine also sits in front of the building.
Inside, City Hall is a spacious structure that includes a large foyer and plenty of open-air halls and rooms. The building’s interior is lit by the sunlight that comes in trough the glass pyramids. City Hall’s chambers provide ample seating in view of the space where council members congregate.
Self-guided tours of City Hall can be performed during City Hall hours, which run from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays and holidays.
