Rating:

Covering a stunning 1,421 hectares near Edmonton, Alberta, Lois Hole Centennial Provincial Park is a massive space that includes the appropriately-named Big Lake, freshwater wetlands and several small deciduous and coniferous forests.

Although the shallow Big Lake takes up almost 60 percent of the park’s land, there’s still plenty of room to roam around and explore. Its magnificent woodlands are some of the area’s most serene and are a major nesting ground and migratory stop for more than 200 species of birds, including black terns, northern pintails, Franklin’s gulls and pectoral sandpipers. Deer, moose, coyotes and butterflies are also common sights at Lois Hole.

The park features a wildlife viewing platform along Big Lake’s eastern shore, a picnic shelter and plenty of walking trails.

Lois Hole Centennial Provincial Park, named after the former Alberta governor, was established in 2005 and encompasses the former Big Lake Natural Area, adding over 300 hectares to that tract of land.
