A designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, Wood Buffalo National Park is also the largest National Park in Canada with an area of around 44,800 sq km. This region has a rich legacy with the Cree, Chipewyan tribes and aboriginal people residing here.
It was established in 1922 with the objective of protecting bison herds. The wildlife of this region is typical of the boreal plains such as the moose, black bear, falcon and the endangered whooping crane.
A unique electro-static phenomenon Aurora Borealis can be observed here, which appears as a luminous display of lights across the night sky. Visit Slave River or Pine Lake for paddling and canoeing. Bird-watching is common at the Peace-Athabasca Delta. Visitors can also enjoy wilderness hiking and backcountry camping.
