| Attractions and things to do |
Built in 1827, Fort Langley is located at the site of a former trading post of the Hudson’s Bay Company, a British trading organisation. Trade in fur, salmon and cranberries was carried out with the natives. Owing to its strategic position close to Fraser River, European trade goods passed through here. Several gold prospectors heading to Fraser River goldfields started from here. In 1839, the original fort was abandoned and a new one was constructed to facilitate farming operations.
It was at ‘Big House’ that British Columbia was proclaimed a colony by the British Government. Visit the bastions and the storehouse, the oldest building at Fort Langley. Interpretive displays of artefacts provide an insight into the site’s history.
