Gitwangak Battle Hill National Historic Site (formerly known as Kitwanga Fort) is located at the site of an eighteenth-century hilltop fort. This site was the scene of a First Nation tribal battle between the Gitwangak people and the Nass River and coastal people, almost two centuries ago. The battle was fought by the coastal people to defend their fishing sites and lucrative trade routes.
Interpretive panels describe the fort and the battle, especially Gitwangak history and their fearsome warrior ‘Nekt’. There is a self-guiding trail on the site which explains the history of this region.
To learn more about this First Nation’s history, visit the Totem Poles of Gitwangak National Historic Site located close by or the heritage sites in the nearby town of Hazelton.
