Established in 1996 with an area of 11,475 sq km, Wapusk National Park includes a large part of the Hudson James Lowlands. ‘Wapusk’ is a Cree (indigenous tribe) word for ‘white bear’, rightly earning this name as this park protects one of the world’s largest polar bear denning areas.
The vegetation of this park largely consists of boreal forests and the Arctic tundra region, serving as a home to 44 mammal species and 250 bird species.
This park contains the Prince of Wales Fort and York Factory National Historic Sites containing historical information on the Hudson’s Bay Company. Activities include polar bear-viewing, whale-watching and wildlife-viewing; these are mainly conducted through tour operators. Wilderness activities are to be carried out with caution.
