| Attractions and things to do |
Established in 1976, Auyuittuq National Park has an area of 19,089 sq km. ‘Auyuittuq’ means ‘land that never melts’ in Inuktitut (native language). This region has a rich legacy with the Dorset, Thule and Inuit people occupying it.
Apart from wildflowers, vegetation is sparse as this region falls under the Arctic tundra belt. Although wildlife is scarce, there are exotic animals like the Arctic fox, caribou and polar bear.
The landscape of this park is dominated by jagged granite mountains, fjords, glaciers and ice fields. Visitors can enjoy a number of activities like hiking and backcountry camping in Akshayuk Pass, skiing in the ice fields, travelling along the fjords and the Penny Ice Cap glacier region, and climbing Mount Thor and Mount Asgard. |
