Forming part of the Canadian National Park System, Grasslands National Park was set up to protect the prairie grasslands. This region has a rich history with the Sitting Bull (American Chief) taking refuge in this region and Sir George Mercer Dawson discovering Western Canada’s first dinosaur remains here.
The unique landscape encompasses 40 different varieties of grasses. Wildlife includes antelopes and deer, with plentiful birdlife such as larks, magpies and owls.
Horseback riding and bicycling are enjoyable ways to explore the park. Other popular activities are bird watching and nature photography. The adventurous can attempt hiking along the eight available trails or try camping. The Visitor Reception Centre has several heritage items.
