Castlegar is situated at West Kootenay, British Columbia. The city lies within the Selkirk Mountains where Columbia and Kootenay rivers collide. The elevation of Castlegar is nearly 450 metres. The total area occupied by the city is 19.8 km². The city has a low growth rate of -4.3%. The population of Castlegar as per 2006 census is 7259. Majority of the natives in Castlegar speak English. French is other common language followed by the natives of Castlegar. More than 80% of the population are Doukobors. The city was a major centre of the Sinixt people. Other communities include the Brillinat, Robson West, Oostichenia, Raspberry, Shoreacres, Pass Creek, Blueberry, Thrus and Krestova. Castlegar was previously incorporated as a village and then into a town by the mid 1960’s. It became a city in 1974 by amalgamating with Kinnaird. In 2004, the city limits were extended to the Blueberry Creek Irrigation District.
