Originally Fort St.John was established in 1794 as a trading post and is the oldest European established settlement in the present British Columbia. After a lapse of 40 years, the city got reopened in 1860 on the south side of the Peace River. So there are many historic landmarks and buildings in the city.
Much of the recreational and cultural facilities are located in the town. There is the Centennial Park groups of which much of the facilities are in central location which is close to the residences and businesses. This large park has the Fort St. John North Peace museum, the North Peace Arena and the North Peace Leisure Pool.
Other parks includes City maintained Fish Creek Community Forest and the Beatton Provincial Park. There is also a theatre and the Peace Gallery North Art gallery. One can also visit the city Public library and the BC Winter Games competitions which take place. There is also ice winter carnival which is held in the month of January.
