Most of the city area is walkable and the waterfront and the street side shops are full of interest for any visitor along the broadwalk. Chinatown was one of the earliest established in the mainland colony and is one of the largest at present.
There are more live performances venues which range from the Massey Theatre to the Burr Theatre. The Royal city musical theater which is long established New Westminster tradition uses the Massey. One can also watch the sports tournament of the baseball and such field sports. There is the New Westminster Museum and Archives which opened in 1865 and which is the oldest intact house in the British Columbia Lower Mainland.
The Hyack Festival and the Anvil Battery is the May Day celebration which began in 1870 and is still an important civic tradition to the present day. This festival is held on the Victoria Day weekend and is distinguished by the Ancient and Honorable Hyack Anvil Battery Salute, a tradition created during the colonial times as a surrogate for a 21 gun salute.
