The Yale in Vancouver is home to British Columbian blues. Over the course of the rhythm and blues club’s rich musical history, it’s played host to Canadian and American blues icons like Gatemouth Brown, Honeyboy Edwards, James Cotton, John Lee Hooker, Jr., Eddy Clearwater, John Hammond, Koko Taylor, Jim Byrnes, Pinetop Perkins, Jeff Healey and Shemekia Copeland.
Known as the focal point for rhythm and blues in western Canada, The Yale hosts nightly shows from some of the genre’s top touring musicians in addition to weekend jam sessions that let the amateurs touch elbows with the greats. The Yale also has its own recording studio and frequently records the shows of those who grace its stage.
In the 1880s, the intimate venue was a hotel that housed miners, loggers and fisherman as they traversed the British Columbian wilderness. It was one of the few buildings to survive a devastating fire, and has now been hosting blues shows for over two decades.
