Home to one of the world’s largest ski resorts, Whistler Mountain is part of the Coast Mountains’ Fitzsimmons Range and is about a two-hour drive north of Vancouver, British Columbia. Originally known as London Mountain, the 2,100-metre-high (7,100 feet) mountain was home to mining activity in the 19th and 20th centuries before the Whistler and Blackcomb ski areas were opened there in 1968.
Whistler and Blackcomb merged in 1997, and now Whistler Blackcomb is a popular skiing destination for winter sports enthusiasts all over the Pacific seaboard and the world. The 3,200-hectare (8,200 acres) ski area is also North America’s largest and includes the most vertical skiable terrain and greatest uphill lift capacity.
Originally designed to host the 1968 Winter Olympics, the ski areas’ initial conceptualization was fulfilled when the world’s best skiers visited Whistler Blackcomb for the 2010 event.
During the summer months, the versatile Whistler Mountain features world-class hiking, gondola rides, mini golf, and bear-viewing tours.
