Fisgard Lighthouse is located in Victoria in British Columbia, Canada.
Built in 1860, Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Site commemorates the first lighthouse on Canada’s west coast. The site lies in the Gulf of Georgia lowlands and is home to wildlife like deer and raccoons, harbour seals and sea lions.
Constructed by the British Government, Fisgard Lighthouse operated as a guide for naval ships entering Esquimalt harbour. It was partly built to direct American gold miners flooding into the region during the Fraser Gold Rush in the mid-nineteenth century.
The former lighthouse keeper’s residence contains exhibits on the site’s history. This site is adjacent to Fort Rodd Hill National Historic Site, a nineteenth-century coastal artillery fort. There are opportunities for scuba-diving, picnicking and bird-watching.
