Portage la Prairie can be described as a city located in Manitoba’s ‘Central Plains Region’, Canada.
The area of Portage la Prairie is 24.67 sq. Km. It lies at an approximate distance of 70 Km on the western side of Winnipeg; thereby sitting on Assiniboine River.
This river had flooded the town on a persistent basis till a ditch got constructed on the northern side of Lake Manitoba for diverting flood waters.
The name ‘Portage la Prairie’ has been derived from ‘portage’, a French word; meaning carrying a canoe over-land; between ‘waterways’. Here, ‘portage’ had been between Lake Manitoba and Assiniboine River; that too, over ‘la prairie’.
As per Environment Canada, ‘Portage la Prairie’ has maximum sunny days during warmer months all over Canada. This city has turned out to be the main center of transportation owing to proximity on its count to river.
Population as per 2006 census was 12728.
