Newfoundland Island has a total area of 111,390 sq km. The island has a population of 505,400. Newfoundland Island lies on the side of North America’s east coast. It falls under the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The Strait of Belle Isle divides the island from the Labrador Peninsula, while the Cabot Strait separates Newfoundland from Cape Breton Island. Newfoundland’s location opposite the St Lawrence River creates the Gulf of St Lawrence, the largest estuary in the world. In spite of being the only identified and authentic Norse Settlement, the island’s culture is predominantly influenced by the European culture. Colonisation of the island has, over the years, reduced the influence of Norse culture.
