The Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre displays ethnological exhibits. The town of Fort Simpson, which received its name from the Governor of the Hudson’s Bay Company George Simpson, has many historical buildings from the colonial period.
Northwest Territories is famous for its natural beauty manifested in its many parks. The Nahanni National Park is host to hot springs, deep canyons and rare flora and fauna. The Wood Buffalo National Park, the largest in Canada, is ideal for eco-tourists. One can camp, hike as well as practise rafting and canoeing in the Peace and Athabasca Rivers. Lake Blachford is ideal for kayaking. It offers opportunities for bird-watching and wildlife-viewing too. Off the main coast, you could visit the picturesque Victoria Island and Cambridge Bay.
The town of Fort Providence is well known for its Indian arts and crafts like anoraks and parkas. Attend the Open Sky Festival in summer, a celebration of the arts of this region. An extremely unique phenomenon that can be observed here is the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights, an electro-static phenomenon which appears as a luminous display of dancing lights across the night sky.
