Aklavik
Towards the west of Inuvik lies the town of Aklavik which is the “home of the polar bears.” In 1912, the Hudson Bay Company established this town in the midst of the Mackenzie delta. Here, one can view the Anglican Episcopal Church which has a highly original stained glass. Within this church one can see scenes from the life of Christ in local conditions. Thus, the Virgin and the Child are wrapped in furs, the Adoration of the Magi happens in the snow and the Holy Family can be seen with a polar bear. During winter, if one desires to reach Aklavik, it is essential to travel through an ice road.
Our Lady of Victory Roman Catholic Church
In Inuvik, one of the landmark buildings is the Our Lady of Victory Roman Catholic Church. This remarkable edifice is modern and igloo shaped. It is comprised of a tabernacle and this also has the shape of an igloo. Mona Trasher, an Inuit artist, has created a magnificent “Way of the Cross.”

In 1996, the Tuktut Nogait National Park was established over an area of 16,340 sq. km. towards the east of Inuvik. In the interior, one can see incredible arctic rock scenery along with impressive cliffs and canyons.
