Arviat is a small hamlet situated on the western shore of the Hudson Bay in the Kivalliq area in the state of Nunavut. The name of the hamlet is derived from the word arviq which means 'Bowhead Whale'. The hamlet has the 3rd largest population in the state, with 2060 inhabitants as per the 2006 census. Fishing and hunting are the main activities of the region. The region has flat tundra and low lying shrubs with sand and gravel ridges. The climate is extremely cold and unpredictable with sudden blizzards especially in February and March. Winters are dry but the summers are pleasant and there may be occasional thunder showers in July and August. In summers the scenery changes with flowers of various colors, bushes, willows and lichens appearing along the road.
