Iqaluit, formerly Frobisher Bay, is the capital of Canada’s newest territory, Nunavut. The city, which is a gateway to the eastern Canadian Arctic, lies at the mouth of the Sylvia Grinnell River and is located in the south-eastern part of Baffin Island.
Iqaluit has a small yellow airport terminal which stands out the moment you land in the city. The only means to enter the city is by air and by sea, weather permitting. Canadian North and First Air offer decent air services to most Canadian cities in the region. However, dog sledding and snowmobiles are always an option for the more adventurous traveller.
Average temperatures are around 15°C in summer and lower than –30°C in winter. Don’t expect too many hours of sunlight in the winter months.
Iqaluit has about 6,000 inhabitants within its limits.
