Ontario, Canada has an area of 1,076,395 sq km and a population of about 12,726,000. Its capital is Toronto. Ontario is bordered by the provinces of Manitoba, Quebec in Canada and the American states of Michigan, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Minnesota. This region is dominated by the Canadian Shield (rocky region), the Hudson Bay Lowlands (swampy areas) and the Great Lakes-Saint Lawrence Valley. Prior to the arrival of the French and the British, the region was inhabited by the Ojibwa, Cree and Huron tribes.
