Located in the beautiful Rainbow Gardens just below Clifton Hill, Oakes Garden Theatre is one of Niagara Falls, Ontario's prime concert and special event spots. Serving as a gateway into Queen Victoria Park, the theatre also sports a magnificent view of Niagara’s famous waterfalls.
Completed in 1937, Oakes was designed to showcase and complement Rainbow Gardens, which features a wide array of plants and flowers, rock beds, lily ponds and well-kept shrubberies. The Greco-Roman-inspired theatre is surrounded by fountains, a curved pergola and a limestone staircase, giving it a truly unique feel and a great backdrop for the city’s stellar performing arts.
The ground that the theatre and surrounding garden now stand on was once home to the Clifton Hotels, which were destroyed by fires in the early 20th century. After obtaining the land, the Niagara Parks Commission began construction on the theatre in 1935 and finished it two years later.
Named after philanthropist Sir Harry Oakes, the theatre was designed by architecture legend Canadian Howard Dunington-Grubb, who envisioned scenic open spaces for the whole community to enjoy.
