The Rideau Canal is also known by the name, the Rideau Waterway and connects Ottawa city on the Ottawa River to Kingston city. Opened in 1832 as a preventative measure in case of confrontation with the United States, it is still in use today and still intact. Operated by Parks Canada as a recreational waterway, it is the oldest continuously operated canal system in North America and was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
