Toronto can be a pretty expensive place to be, indeed, but cheap tricks under your belt will make it easier and lighter on your wallet! For dining out there are some restaurants that have also a romantic feel that are not so costly.
For instance you may try the 7 West Cafe, it is open 24 hours and offers pasta, pita pizzas, lovely sandwiches and a steady flow of cheesecakes! You'll find it in 7, Charles Street W. near the University of Toronto. For dinners the prices range under 50$.
There's also C'Est What where you'll find Toronto's true local flavours in craft beer for instance and there's lovely food too. It's located in the cellar of an historic century building in the St. Lawrence Market area. The place has a somehow "Old Town" charm to it; it also offers board games, pool table, smoking room and it houses an internet radio station, the What's Next Radio that features independently produced music.
You might also try the Rhino Bar in 1249, Quenn Street W.,a place to party, eat and drink without getting broke! They offer a massive beer list from all over the World, yet, you barely feel you're paying domestic prices! Plus the food it is also cheap and delicious too!
